Holly and Heather’s Weekly Handy Hint: Spring Donations!

Spring is a great time to clean out your closets so why not donate your things instead of throwing them away? Every now and again, especially with the change of seasons, we like to go through our clothes and get rid of things that no longer fit or items we just haven’t worn in a while. We put big garbage bags in our respective garages and slowly fill them as we clean out a drawer or a closet shelf (sometimes it takes us a while to fill – we are not speedy de-clutterers!) There are lots of places that will take your unwanted items. We give to local ministries, the salvation army, big brothers big sisters and we even recycle between each other. Often times nursery schools are grateful for donations of gently used books and toys that our children have outgrown.  Each winter we take old sweaters, coats and jeans to the homeless shelter in town. Sometimes we see our old warm coats walking away with new owners right in front of us, how great is that? What do you do with your unwanted stuff?

Holly and Heather’s Weekly Handy Hint: Positive Outlook

This week’s blog is dedicated to our Uncle Richie.  Some people have so much adversity to overcome….

Have a positive outlook!  Our world presents us with so many negative images and information in the media from newspapers to televsion and the internet.  How do we keep our heads up when it feels like we’re constantly bombarded?  In order to do good in the world, a positive outlook is essential for putting that loving energy out to all we encounter throughout the day.  Cheerfulness and love are contagious!   A few things we like to do to stay positive are: Sit quietly first thing in the morning, before turning on the tv, computer or opening the newspaper and put our good intentions for ourselves and those we love out to the universe (call it meditation, call it prayer or whatever else you like).  Make eye contact with those you meet throughout the day and smile (this can be tricky – we live in NY!).  Have a long term vision of what you would like for your life and keep that vision in mind throughout the day.  Talk to someone close to you if you’re having a tough day – your friend, sibling, parent or spouse.  We like to talk to each other if we have a problem.  It always helps us feel better when we share and it clears our minds to focus on good things!  What do you like to do to maintain a positive outlook?  How do you try to put good intentions out to the world?

Welcome to our blog: “Holly & Heather’s Helping Hands”!

We are identical twin sisters, business partners and best friends who wanted to create this blog with the idea to inspire, motivate and help our readers make this world a better place.  As mothers, wives, daughters and friends, we hope to help one small step at a time.  We will be sharing our thoughts and charitable ideas in this blog weekly.  You are invited to join us on this journey…

Twin blessings, Holly & Heather

Holly & Heather’s Weekly Handy Hint

It’s easy to make a big difference in the world by doing something small during the week.  One thing we like to do is help feed the hungry.  While we are doing our weekly food shopping for our families, we pick up an extra item or two to donate to a local food pantry.  A can of veggies can cost as little as 49 cents and we drop it off in the lobby of our church when we worship on Sunday.  The food goes directly to the food pantry to feed the poor locally.  There is need right in our backyard as we are sure there is in yours as well.
