Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: Let It Go

We have a personal mantra that we say to each other in a helpful way after venting about a problem…”let it go”. It applies to so many situations in life but is sometimes hard to do. It is so important towards your goal of inner peace and a happy life, it’s worth giving a try. Some people hold on to hurts from childhood, others may be recent problems from job related issues to family difficulty. They are real hurts, not to be diminished, but dwelling on them for days, months or even years only hurts you. By not moving forward, you become stuck in an unhappy frame of mind.

We can’t change the past, only how we live today.  Here’s a thought –  have a big venting session with someone close to you, your spouse, sibling or friend about what is bothering you, something you’re having a hard time letting go of. Tell them just to listen if they can, and help you to get it all out in a constructive way. Then say to yourself or out loud, “I’m letting this go now”.  Each time it creeps into your mind, try to repeat that phrase. Focus on the good, positive things in your life. Do whatever it is that gives you joy; cooking, your favorite hobby, tv show or taking a long walk. You are not ignoring the hurt, you are choosing to let it go.  Regain your well-being and happy sense of self.  Keep your joy!

Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: Summer of Volunteering!

Summer is here and hopefully with it brings a great chance to do some good in the world and volunteer! Giving back to your community or helping those less fortunate is so important. It’s not just good for others, it will give you a spiritual and mental lift that you carry out into the world. A win-win! We’ve noticed a trend toward some of today’s graduates who are putting volunteering on the top of their priority lists.  Not only does it look great on a resume, helping to increase job hiring potential, but it also gets kids out of their hometown bubble, enabling them to see the world, see the need and hopefully be inspired to make a difference in the future.  How great is that?

We try to volunteer on a regular basis, here are some of the things we do and will be doing (with our kids too!) this summer:
* Clean out your bookshelves. We’ve recently donated to our local elementary school and to an outreach program.
* Have your kids volunteer to be counselors at a camp. Ours love it.  It  gets them out in the fresh air, being role models and teaches them a little about work and helping others.
* Work at a food pantry. Although we donate canned goods throughout the year, rolling up your sleeves and actually packing groceries to feed the hungry is very rewarding for all involved. Even just putting in 1 hour, once a month helps.

Whether you like to help out with animals, plant some trees or read to the elderly, summer is a great time to volunteer.  The need is always there, usually right in your backyard.  We hope we’ve helped inspire you to get out there and do some good! What tops your list for volunteering?

Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: Have a Happy Father’s Day!

Father’s Day weekend is coming up and we’d like to wish all of the dad’s and those who are father figures a very happy father’s day! Your job is so important to those little one’s looking up to you and appreciated by all of the women who depend on you to help raise them. We decided to give our dad the day off from the bbq this Sunday (he makes the best burgers!) and order a hero to celebrate the day. Nothing fancy, just time spent together as a family, relaxing, eating and enjoying good conversation. A very happy father’s day to our husbands, the loves of our lives and the best dad’s! And to our dad, we love you, enjoy your day!

Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: Laugh It Up!

There is a famous quote we’re sure you’ve heard, “Laughter is the best medicine”.  There are lots of studies and articles written on the health benefits of laughing; it certainly is stress-relieving. When was the last time you had a really good belly laugh? Not just a little chuckle, but actually lost your breath laughing so hard? Sometimes when we get together as a family, the smallest thing can make us laugh. The world is so serious (and so are we sometimes!) that is feels good every now & then to take a break from worrying or re-living a problem in your mind and just have a good laugh. Here are some fun things we like to do that always make us smile:

* Go see a comedian. Recently we went to see Jerry Seinfeld.  He & his opening act, Tom Papa, were a riot!  Two hours of laughing!  We have a lot of local comedy clubs in our area, but if you don’t you can watch a stand-up routine on television. They are hysterical!
* Get together with some friends or family and just have fun. Invite people over that you are close to so you don’t feel self-conscious about relaxing (and possibly snorting or crying with laughter!). Some of their stories are the funniest!
* Rent a classic sitcom or movie from your library and just escape into silliness.

It is important to lighten up every now and then and have a good belly laugh.  It feels so good!  What makes you laugh?
