Holly and Heather’s Helpful Hint: Health Matters

by helpinghandstwins

We have mentioned previously about how important it is to take care of yourself. We’ve all heard the airplane safety speech – put on your own oxygen mask before you help others. To that end, we will be blogging over the next few weeks about taking care of a lot of things in your life, starting first with your health.

Once a year, make all of your doctor appointments.  Schedule the visits at a memorable time of year, such as your birthday, the new year or the start of a new season.  Start with your annual physical.  Get blood work, have your blood pressure and all the vitals tested.  Go to the eye doctor, especially if you haven’t been there for years.  Vision changes as you age and glaucoma is a silent disease that only a doctor can test for.  If you are a woman, see the gynecologist.  Don’t be afraid to ask intimate questions…they’ve seen and heard everything!  Make a dental appointment, including a cleaning with the hygienist.  If you need to see a specialist on a regular basis, keep up with those visits.  Whether it’s an allergist you need to see seasonally or a cardiologist to watch your meds, it’s important to follow thru.  Also, after a certain age other screenings become important such as colonoscopies and mammograms.  One of our family members (who is a doctor) said those tests save lives!

Prevention is key when it comes to your health.  Make sure you are eating lots of fruits and veggies, lean protein, drinking water and not consuming too much sugar.  Exercise on a regular basis; even just walking is highly beneficial.  Get a good amount of sleep,  your body needs it to function properly.  Reduce stress and anxiety as much as you possibly can.  They can wreak havoc on your body, mind and spirit.

Take care of yourself – you’ll do great things in your life if you feel great!
