Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: Keep Your Word

We all lead busy lives whether you are working, taking care of home and family, running errands or making “me” time a priority. Many times we have the best of intentions to do something, talk to someone or go somewhere but sometimes life gets in the way and things don’t work out as planned.  When we make a commitment we try hard to keep our plans.  If it’s not possible to do that, we let that person know.  People usually understand that things come up and plans can change.  In keeping with the spirit of this blog in making this world a better place (starting with us!) honesty and reliability are qualities we believe are very important.  You never know when someone could be counting on you.

Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: Venting vs. Complaining

No one wants to listen to a constant complainer. Chronically moaning about something that bothers you without doing anything about it can be tiresome for a listener. But sometimes you need to vent. And we think there’s a difference. With complaining, usually there’s no real change. But when someone’s venting, it’s more of a “have to get this off my chest right now” feeling. And sometimes you don’t even need an audience to vent. You can take a walk to blow off steam and just put it out to the universe. Or turn your energy into exercise or some creative outlet. You see with venting, it’s more immediate and usually you feel better after letting it out. When you complain about a problem, there may not be a solution and you’re left feeling unsatisfied. So let it out if it’s not hurting anyone. It might be just what’s needed.

Holly and Heather’s Helpful Hint: Inspiring Words

“Enjoy going through life as yourself.”  A quote by Lena Dunham we recently read.  We’ve blogged before about being true to yourself.  There is something about that message that is so powerful and wonderful.  It is forgiving and freeing.  So often we feel guilty if we are not “perfect”, trying so hard to say and do the right thing all the time that we can lose sense of ourselves.  Worrying about pleasing everybody, we sometimes put aside our own likes and dislikes.  It can interfere with what fulfills us in a career, the food we eat, friendships and how we spend our time at home.  While we do not want to live a selfish life, we want to be free to be ourselves.  And to enjoy it.  That is the hard part.

Holly and Heather’s Helpful Hint: Summer Giving

We try to contribute our time, talent and treasure to charitable endeavors throughout the year but summer time giving can be challenging. Vacations, work and lazy days bring us out of our usual routines and can make us lose focus on giving back. Here are a few things that might spark you to donate this August:

* School supplies – Pick up an extra spiral notebook, pack of pencils or box of crayons to donate to those in need.

* Vacation Bible School – Always a fun week (we used to go as kids!) to donate your time handing out snacks, making crafts or reading Bible stories.

*Food – A quick and easy way to help those in need is to pick up a few extra items at the supermarket while you are already shopping.  Those who are hungry can use the assistance year round.

* Smiles – Don’t forget something as simple as a smile and a kind word is free to give to those around you and goes a long way toward making this world a better place!
